Use Case

GC Halo® will prove a valuable tool to Governments and health institutions internationally who are acutely aware that air quality and exceptional ventilation and filtering equipment will play a prominent role in their strategies.

Reduced exposure to airborne pathogens including Covid will be an essential facet of public health protection in all community buildings including entertainment venues, hospitals and schools and in all forms of mass transport systems. GC Halo coated air filters provide long-lasting, effective protection against a wide range of viruses, bacteria and mould. Tests have shown the coating doesn’t shed in air filtering applications and there is no contamination risk. It’s a convenient, cost-effective solution requiring no retrofitting that works and can be:

  • Coated onto filter material for ventilation solutions
  • Applied to materials to create new products or incorporated into existing product ranges to create enhanced products

  • What is GC Halo®

    GC Halo® is our patent-pending graphene oxide/silver nanoparticle formulation that forms an antimicrobial layer on fabrics.

  • How does it work?

    GC Halo® works with a dual action, “trap-and-neutralize” nano-chemistry where graphene oxide and silver nanoparticles work together.

    The negatively-charged surface of the graphene oxide traps water droplets and the protein spikes on coronavirus; the silver nanoparticles neutralize coronavirus by oxidizing the membrane that protects the RNA inside.

    All this happens on the nano-scale – which makes it more effective. If you’d like the detailed scientific version of this, you can look at the Brown University report.

  • Is it effective?

    Yes, tests by Brown University have shown that GC Halo® in liquid form is 100% effective against Human Coronavirus OC43 and Influenza A H1N1 viruses – in less than one minute.

    Also, independent UK ISO tests on GC Halo® treated fabric to determine antiviral activity on textiles have been certified to show at least 99% effectiveness against SARS-CoV-2 – tested according to ISO 18184:2019. Independent testing at Innovative Bioanalysis shows 77% reduction in Airborne SARS-CoV-2 in a single pass, increasing with additional passes.

    Additionally, GC Halo® coated air filters proven to be 99.99% efficacy against mould (aspergillus brasiliensis) and bacteria (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus).

  • Is it safe?

    Yes, an independent study by the UK Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) confirms no shedding of GC Ink® particles in airflow tests of GC Halo® treated filter materials – addressing toxicity concerns. The CPI study used over 20,000 sampling data points to measure particle shedding of GC Ink® and found none.

    We are preparing for the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approval process, as well as the EU’s Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR) approval process, covering both effectiveness and safety, and we are obtaining International Standards Office (ISO) certifications for product applications.

  • Why did you develop GC Halo®?

    We developed the ink in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Before the pandemic hit, we were working on a joint project with Brown University to develop a graphene oxide formulation to coat on clothing that would protect against mosquito bites – we significantly adapted and extended this formulation to protect against Coronavirus.
